  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Decoration Ingredients

  • 1 batch buttercream frosting for decoration
  • 1 cup fresh berries for topping
  • chocolates or sprinkles for garnish

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • Measure and prepare all cake ingredients.

Mixing the Batter

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat the mixture on medium speed for about 2 minutes until smooth.
  • Carefully stir in the boiling water.

Baking

  • Pour the batter evenly into prepared cake pans and tap gently to remove bubbles.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cooling and Decorating

  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Spread buttercream frosting on the first layer before adding the second and then frost the top and sides.
  • Top with fresh berries and sprinkle chocolates or sprinkles as desired.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend. Feel free to customize with different decorations or frosting flavors.
