Onion Ring Ingredients

  • 2 large large onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour For the coating
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs For additional crunch
  • 1 teaspoon paprika Adds flavor
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder For extra flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk For dipping
  • Oil for frying Vegetable oil recommended

Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice the large onions into rings, aiming for a thickness of about half an inch. Separate the rings and set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to mix the spices evenly.

Coating the Onion Rings

  • Pour the buttermilk into another bowl. Dip each onion ring into the buttermilk, ensuring it’s fully coated. Let excess buttermilk drip off.
  • Dredge each buttermilk-coated onion ring in the flour spice mixture, shaking off any excess.
  • Place the dredged onion rings into a bowl filled with breadcrumbs and gently press the breadcrumbs onto the rings to create a firm coating.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Ensure there is enough oil to fully submerge the onion rings.
  • Carefully add the onion rings in batches to the hot oil and fry until golden brown, around 2-4 minutes per batch. Avoid overcrowding.
  • Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion rings from the oil and place them on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour and use gluten-free breadcrumbs. For a dairy-free version, replace buttermilk with dairy-free milk mixed with vinegar.
