Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 pound smoked sausage, sliced
  • 2 cups long-grain rice
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 large bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Substitutes and Alternatives

  • Turkey sausage instead of smoked sausage For a leaner option.
  • Plant-based sausage instead of shrimp For a vegetarian or vegan dish.
  • Quinoa or cauliflower rice instead of traditional rice For a low-carb substitute.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients. Ensure shrimp are peeled and deveined, sausage is sliced, and vegetables are chopped.

Cooking the Base

  • In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion, bell pepper, and celery. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until softened.

Adding Flavors

  • Stir in minced garlic and sliced sausage. Cook for another 5 minutes until the sausage is browned.

Incorporating Shrimp

  • Add shrimp, Cajun seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Cook until shrimp turns pink and opaque, about 3-5 minutes.

Combining Ingredients

  • Pour in the long-grain rice and chicken broth. Stir gently to combine, then bring to a boil.

Simmering

  • Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.

Finishing Touch

  • After 20 minutes, remove the pot from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.

Notes

For an extra kick, add hot sauce before serving. This dish is great for leftovers as the flavors meld over time.
