Cookie Dough Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour Can be substituted with gluten-free flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Can be replaced with coconut oil or vegan butter
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg Can be replaced with unsweetened applesauce or flaxseed meal mixed with water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract Can be substituted with more vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons milk Add as needed for dough consistency

Decoration Ingredients

  • Red and pink icing For decoration
  • Sprinkles Optional, for extra decoration

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by gathering all your ingredients on a clean counter.
  • In a medium-sized bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Whisk these together until well-blended and set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, use a hand mixer or stand mixer to cream together the softened unsalted butter and white sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in one egg into the creamed butter and sugar, followed by adding the vanilla and almond extracts. Mix until fully incorporated.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture into the wet ingredients, mixing until everything is just combined to avoid overworking the dough.
  • If the dough feels too dry, add 3 to 4 tablespoons of milk. Mix until the dough is soft and smooth but not sticky.
  • Roll the dough into small balls, roughly 1-2 inches in diameter, and place them on a lined cookie sheet, leaving enough space between each.
  • Gently flatten each ball slightly with the palm of your hand or the bottom of a glass.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes. Look for a golden edge, while the centers remain soft.

Cooling and Decorating

  • Once baked, remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on wire racks.
  • Once cooled, apply red and pink icing and sprinkle as desired for decoration.

Notes

To store cookies, ensure they are completely cooled before placing them in an airtight container. They can be kept at room temperature for about a week. If freezing, wrap individual cookies in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag for about three months.
