Main ingredients

  • 2 pounds potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet) Choose based on preference or availability.
  • 2 cups heavy cream Can be substituted with half-and-half for a lighter version.
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese Can be substituted with other melting cheeses.
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese Feel free to mix with other cheese types.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Essential for flavor; can omit if preferred.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional) For added flavor; can be omitted.
  • Fresh parsley for garnish Adds color and freshness to the dish.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Wash and peel the potatoes, then slice them thinly to about 1/8 inch thick.

Cooking the Base

  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine heavy cream, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and optional paprika. Warm slightly without boiling.

Assembling the Gratin

  • Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  • Layer thinly sliced potatoes in the dish, pour some garlic cream mixture over the first layer.
  • Sprinkle a generous layer of Gruyère and cheddar cheese over the potatoes.
  • Repeat layering with potatoes, garlic cream, and cheese, finishing with a top layer of cheese.

Baking

  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
  • Check for doneness after initial baking: insert a fork; if it goes through easily, it's ready.
  • Let the gratin rest for about 10 minutes before garnishing with parsley.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Can be frozen for longer storage. Reheat by covering and baking at 350°F (175°C) for 20-30 minutes.
