Preparation

  • Begin by gathering and preparing all your ingredients. Slice the potatoes thinly, chop the onion, and mince the garlic.

Cooking the Base

  • In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef while breaking it apart with a spatula.
  • Once the meat is nearly cooked, add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook until the onion becomes translucent and the beef is thoroughly browned.

Layering

  • Grease a baking dish to prevent sticking. Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly at the bottom of the dish.
  • Spread your cooked ground beef mixture over the first layer of potatoes.
  • Open your can of cream of mushroom soup and spread it over the beef layer.
  • Add the remaining sliced potatoes on top of the beef and soup.

Final Steps

  • Sprinkle salt and pepper over the top layer of potatoes.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 1 hour.
  • After 1 hour, carefully remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheese on top. Return the dish to the oven for an additional 15 minutes.
  • Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and let it sit for about 10 minutes before serving.
