  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients and let the butter come to room temperature.
  • Measure out the dry ingredients like flour, baking soda, and spices ahead of time.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.

Cream Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Combine Wet Ingredients

  • Beat in the egg and molasses until well blended.

Combine Mixtures

  • Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet mixture and stir until just combined.

Chill Dough

  • Divide the dough into two discs, wrap them in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Bake Cookies

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cut out shapes using cookie cutters and place them on a lined baking sheet.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes until the cookies are firm to the touch.
  • Let them cool completely before decorating.
