Ingrédients

For the Donuts

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 6 tbsp melted butter
  • 10-15 drops red food coloring

For the Cream Cheese Glaze

  • 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 4 oz unsalted butter (room temp)
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 5 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease your donut pan.
  • Gather all your ingredients in one place.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder.

Combine Wet Ingredients

  • In a separate cup, combine the buttermilk, white vinegar, eggs, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.

Cream Butter and Sugars

  • In another bowl, cream together the melted butter, granulated sugar, and dark brown sugar until fluffy and pale.

Combine Mixtures

  • Gradually alternate adding the dry ingredients and wet mixture to the butter-sugar mixture, stirring until just combined.

Add Color

  • Add the red food coloring to the batter and mix until fully incorporated.

Pipe and Bake

  • Transfer the batter into a pastry bag and pipe it into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about three-quarters full.
  • Bake for approximately 9 minutes, until the donuts spring back when lightly touched.

Cool the Donuts

  • Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Prepare Glaze

  • In a mixing bowl, beat together softened cream cheese, unsalted butter, powdered sugar, milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider using high-quality cocoa powder. You can skip the red food coloring for a classic chocolate donut flavor. These donuts are best served fresh but can be stored for 2-3 days in an airtight container.
