  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Can be substituted with gluten-free flour if needed.
  • 2 cups warm water (about 110°F/43°C) Temperature is important for activating yeast.
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 2 tbsp sugar Can be reduced for a less sweet bread.
  • 2 tsp salt Enhances flavor.
  • 2 tbsp olive oil Can replace with other fats for different flavors.

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients: 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 cups of warm water, 1 packet of active dry yeast, sugar, salt, and olive oil.
  • In a medium bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the measured flour and salt. Mix until evenly incorporated.
  • Add the frothy yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until it has doubled in size.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan.
  • Cover the loaf and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Bake the bread for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

To keep bread fresh, store it in a bread box or paper bag. If freezing, wrap tightly in plastic. Thaw and heat in the oven to regain softness. Experiment with adding herbs, cheese, or seeds for unique variations.
