Ingrédients
  

For the Crust

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with whole wheat or gluten-free flour.
  • 0.5 cups granulated sugar Can substitute with brown sugar for a richer flavor.
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed) Keep cold for a flaky crust.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Apple Filling

  • 4 medium apples (peeled, cored, and sliced thinly) Use honeycrisp or granny smith apples.
  • 0.33 cups granulated sugar Can substitute with maple syrup or honey.
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon Can add nutmeg or allspice for variation.
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, mix together 2 1/2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 1/2 tsp of salt.
  • Cut in 1 cup of cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in 1 tsp of vanilla extract.

Baking

  • Press half of the crust mixture into the prepared pan and bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden.
  • In a separate bowl, combine apple slices with 1/3 cup sugar, 1 tbsp flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 1 tbsp lemon juice. Toss gently to coat.
  • Spread the apple mixture over the baked crust.
  • Crumble the remaining crust mixture over the apples.
  • Bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  • Let cool completely in the pan before cutting.

Notes

Use a sharp knife to cut the bars for clean edges. Refrigerating for an hour after cooling will make cutting easier.
