  • 2 cups diced apples Choose sweet apples like Fuji or Honeycrisp for best flavor.
  • 1 cup sugar Adjust to taste or substitute with honey for a natural sweetener.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Freshly squeezed is preferred for better flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon This adds warmth and enhances the flavors.
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg For a more aromatic twist.
  • 1 tablespoon butter Can be replaced with olive oil for a dairy-free version.
  • 1 cup water Helps in cooking the cranberries and apples.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by washing your fresh cranberries thoroughly under cold water.
  • Dice your apples, ensuring they are about the same size for even cooking.

Cooking

  • In a large saucepan, combine the cranberries, diced apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and water.
  • Bring this mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally to mix the ingredients well.
  • Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes.
  • After 20 minutes of simmering, add 1 tablespoon of butter to the dish and stir it in until melted.
  • If you prefer a thicker consistency, you can simmer the dish for an additional 5 minutes and adjust the sugar if necessary.
  • Once done, take it off the heat and let it cool slightly before serving.

Serving

  • The Cranberry Apple Dish can be served warm with a scoop of ice cream or chilled as a side dish.
  • Consider garnishing it with a sprinkle of cinnamon for added visual appeal.

Storage

  • If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.
  • For reheating, simply warm it in a saucepan over low heat while stirring occasionally.

Notes

Skip the simmering step can result in hard apples; always allow time for softening. For enhanced flavor, experiment with adding a tablespoon of grated ginger or additional spices like allspice or cloves. Serve in a clear bowl to showcase the colors.
