Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • for garnish Fresh basil optional

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather and prep all your ingredients. Dice the onion, carrots, and celery finely; mince the garlic and measure out your ground beef and crushed tomatoes.

Cooking

  • In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once shimmering, add the mirepoix (onion, carrots, and celery). Sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute, ensuring it does not burn.
  • Add ground beef to the pot, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Brown for 8-10 minutes until no pink remains.
  • Pour in red wine, scraping the bottom to remove browned bits. Simmer for about 5 minutes to reduce.
  • Stir in crushed tomatoes and bring to a gentle simmer.
  • Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste after simmering.

Serving

  • Once seasoned, serve the sauce over your favorite cooked pasta and garnish with fresh basil.

Notes

This sauce can be made ahead of time; its flavors deepen if stored properly. It freezes well for up to 3 months.
