  • 1 unit Sponge cake (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 cups Creamy custard (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2-3 cups Fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
  • 1 cup Whipped cream Plus more for topping
  • to taste Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Almond extract Optional for added flavor

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients to streamline the process.
  • If you're making sponge cake from scratch, do this first and allow it to cool completely before proceeding.

Cook the Custard

  • Prepare the creamy custard if you're making it from scratch. Follow your recipe carefully to ensure it reaches a smooth and creamy consistency.
  • If using store-bought, simply pour it into a mixing bowl and whisk lightly to incorporate air.

Assemble Layers

  • Cut the cooled sponge cake into bite-sized pieces.
  • In a large trifle dish or individual glasses, place a layer of sponge cake at the bottom.
  • Over the layer of sponge, gently spoon a layer of creamy custard.
  • Next, add a layer of fresh berries.
  • Continue adding layers of cake, custard, and berries until you reach the top of the dish, finishing with a layer of custard.
  • Add a generous topping of whipped cream, ensuring to cover the custard completely.
  • Garnish with additional fresh berries and a light drizzle of almond extract if desired.

Chill and Serve

  • Refrigerate the trifle for at least 2 hours, or ideally, overnight.
  • When ready to serve, scoop out generous portions, ensuring each serving captures all layers.

Notes

For best results, avoid over-soaking the sponge cake and allow for proper chilling time. Customize with seasonal fruits and flavors for a personal touch.
