Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients and ensure the butter is softened. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

Cream Butter and Sugar

  • In another bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (3-5 minutes).

Incorporate Eggs and Vanilla

  • Add the eggs one at a time to the creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract until fully combined.

Combine Ingredients

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture along with the whole milk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.

Bake the Cake

  • Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9x13 inch baking dish. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Cool and Prepare Milk Mixture

  • Allow the cake to cool for about 30 minutes in the baking dish.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and heavy cream until well combined.

Soak the Cake

  • Poke holes all over the cooled cake with a fork or skewer and pour the milk mixture evenly over the top, ensuring full coverage.

Chill

  • Refrigerate the milk-soaked cake for at least 2 hours or preferably overnight.

Finish and Serve

  • Whip heavy cream until soft peaks form and spread over the top of the chilled cake. Garnish with chocolate shavings or cocoa powder.

Notes

For enhanced chocolate flavor, adding a pinch of espresso powder in the cake batter can deepen the taste. Freezing individual slices in plastic wrap is recommended for later enjoyment.
