Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients and equipment. Wash and cut your broccoli into florets, measuring out the cheese, milk, butter, and flour.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cooking

  • Steam the broccoli florets until tender, around 5–7 minutes, then set aside.
  • Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute until it turns light golden.
  • Gradually add the milk while whisking to prevent lumps. Stir until thickened, about 2–3 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  • Combine the steamed broccoli with the cheese sauce in a large baking dish, ensuring every piece is coated.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use almond or soy milk and nutritional yeast. For gluten-free, use cornstarch instead of flour.
