For the Gravy

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth Vegetable broth can be used.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients, and cube the bread into bite-sized pieces.

Cooking

  • In a skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat for 7-10 minutes until browned.
  • Whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper in a large bowl until smooth.
  • Combine the cubed bread, cooked sausage, and shredded cheese into the egg mixture, stirring gently.
  • Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Bake in an oven preheated to 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes until set and lightly golden.

Gravy Preparation

  • While the casserole bakes, use the sausage drippings to prepare the gravy. Whisk in the flour and cook for one minute.
  • Gradually add the chicken broth while whisking to avoid lumps, then stir in garlic powder.
  • Cook until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.

Serving

  • Once the casserole is done, let it cool slightly, then cut into squares. Serve warm, topped with the sausage gravy.
