Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients.
  • Drain and rinse the black beans well, then set them aside.

Cooking

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat. Chop the onion, bell pepper, and garlic.
  • In a large mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until they are broken down but still a bit chunky.
  • Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the mashed black beans.
  • Sprinkle in the chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  • Stir in the breadcrumbs.
  • Crack the egg into the mixture and stir until combined.
  • Take a handful of mixture and shape into a patty, repeat until all mixture is used.
  • Cook the patties in the preheated skillet for about 5-7 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
  • Remove the patties from the heat and serve them with your favorite toppings.

Notes

If freezing, place cooked patties in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze for a few hours before storing. For dietary needs, adapt with gluten-free breadcrumbs, or substitute the egg for a flax egg.
